NV-CURE Director and Secretary Position and a Grant Writer

A position as a Director and Secretary for NV-CURE will be open within the next year. Our current Director and Secretary, WILLIAM O’CONNELL, is going to retire from the position. He has done a wonderful job and we sincerely hate to see him go.

Any person interested in becoming a Director and the Secretary for NV-CURE should contact our leader, John Witherow, and request consideration for the positions. As a Director, you will vote on issues and assist in running the organization. As the Secretary, you will be the backbone of the organization and be the person who handles the mail (pick-up, delivery, scanning, and e-mailing), securing people to answer
prisoner correspondence, work on special projects, logging, printing and mailing newsletter, tracking membership and supporting, logging complaints, making bank deposits, assisting with fundraisers, talking and typing minutes of meetings, and performing any other functions needed by the organization It is a very big job and any applicant should be prepared to devote a significant amount of time to the job.

Right now, the Secretary is paid $1.00 per year for their work for NV-CURE, which is donated back to the organization. We are going to try to change that. We are looking for a grant writer and the number one project of the grant writer will be trying to secure a grant for $50,000.00 per
year for the work and operation of NV-CURE of the Secretary.

Anyone want the job? If so, please contact our organization.

We also need a grant writer. Is there any out there who wants to be a grant writer, or assist a person in the process, with the very first project of securing a grant for pay for the NV-CURE Secretary position? If so, please contact our organization immediately.

Our New InfoBulletin is out now!

Nevada Cure just published the latest issue of the Informational Bulletin, with among others:

  • Status of Proposed Legislation On Prisons and Parole
  • Formerly Incarcerated People Can Vote, and
  • Check Your Voting Right Status
  • A Report on the April 2019 NV-CURE and NDOC Meeting
  • A Request to Prisoners with Suggestions Regarding the Grievance Procedures
  • News about Hep-C and NV Hep C Class Action Lawsuit
  • Prison Reform: Overpopulation: More Good Time, by a NV Prisoner
  • A review of the book The Meaning of Life: The Case for Abolishing Life Sentences (The New Press, 2018), by Mark Mauer and Ashley Nellis of the Sentencing Project
(www.sentencingproject.org), a criminal justice reform organization, and a start of a discussion on abolishing Life Sentences.

“While the elimination of life sentences is not a reform that will be embraced by  state legislatures in the very near future, it is heartening that there is a growing awareness of the need to reconsider the life sentence, not only in the interest of cost-effectiveness, but in the interest of becoming a more humanitarian society.”

Read our 12-page Informational Bulletin (nr 35) here, print it and send it to a prisoner whom you know will want to read it.

AB 510 Good Time Disciplinary Report

From our Informational Bulletin no 34 (March 2019):

NDOC Administration Notice, Dated 3/1/19:

NV-CURE has been advising all NDOC prisoners who have received a disciplinary report for filing false or inaccurate claims for the extra good time mandated by NRS 209.4465 (2007) to send us a copy of the disciplinary report and appeal documents.

We have addressed the problems and concerns regarding these disciplinary reports with NDOC Director Dzurenda, Deputy Director of Programs Kim Thomas and other NDOC Administration officials. These NDOC leaders have agreed these problems and concerns need to be addressed and appropriate corrective action initiated. We have provided the information we received and corrective action is being taken.

The NDOC Administration has requested NV-CURE publish in this newsletter a Notice to All Prisoners who received a disciplinary report and a guilty finding for filing a false or inaccurate claim of entitlement to the extra good time mandated by NRS 209.4465 (2007) to send the documentation and information relevant to their disciplinary proceedings and a short letter explaining your inappropriate filing and a request
for dismissal of the disciplinary finding to:

NDOC Director James Dzurenda, or
Deputy Director of Programs Kim Thomas
Attn: AB 510 Disciplinary Proceedings
Casa Grande Transitional Housing
3955 W. Russell Road
Las Vegas, NV 89118

Director Dzurenda and Deputy Director Thomas are both interested in ensuring you are treated fairly in this matter.

Especially important in this matter is the fact that many NV District Judges incorrectly denied many prisoner applications for this good in original proceedings, these Judges were reversed by the NV Supreme Court for incorrectly deciding these cases and no disciplinary proceedings were filed against those Judges. A prisoner simply cannot be held to a higher standard of knowledge of the law than a District Court Judge.

NV-CURE thanks Director Dzurenda and Deputy Director Thomas for their understanding and comprehension of the justice and fairness issue involved in this matter.

Nevada Cure Celebrates #GivingTuesday and Pledges to find volunteers and be open to your donations for the upcoming months ahead.

Las Vegas, November 15th, 2018

This #GivingTuesday, November 27th, Nevada Cure will celebrate giving by finding volunteers and being open to your donations for the upcoming months ahead.

#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. Following Thanksgiving and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, this year’s #GivingTuesday will take place on November 27th and will kick off the giving season by inspiring people to collaborate and give back.

Nevada Cure is an all-volunteer non-profit organization that works on human rights issues concerning people incarcerated in Nevada and returning citizens. From our website:

“We are a support- and advocacy group of people whose life has been negatively affected by Nevada’s criminal justice system.

We offer compassionate caring and information to help prisoners, their families, and friends navigate “the system”.

Our board members hold a Monthly Meeting in Las Vegas which is also a teleconference.

We publish an Informational Bulletin for people inside and out.

We respond to prisoners’ mail and we address structural problems in our meetings with the director of prisons.”

Our funds come mosty from donations.

What our goals are

* For the coming months we are fundraising for our Informational Bulletins (readable online and printed and sent to our members inside and out), as well as for our ongoing costs to keep our organization running smoothly.

Gaining knowledge about the prison system, rules and regulations, new laws, politics, is very important, and Nevada Cure wants to inform both the public, its members as well as the members inside as well as possible.

* We are also in search of new volunteers to join our team for various tasks.

This is why we are joining #GivingTuesday this year!

Those who are interested in joining Nevada Cure’s #GivingTuesday initiative can visit this page: http://www.nevadacure.org/p/donate-to-nevada-cure.html.

About Nevada Cure

In 2011 a small group restarted the Nevada chapter of Citizens United for the Rehabilitation of Errands (Cure). Nevada has had a reputation of prisoner health care negligence, staff to prisoner violence, very unhealthy prison food, and many more problems that thwart rehabilitation of formerly incarcerated citizens.

With help of volunteers, donations by generous people, and persistence, Nevada Cure has established itself as a dedicated group of volunteers addressing the problems inside the Nevada prison system, and creating more justice and fairness, and thereby less repeat offenders, and more safety.

To learn more about our work, please visit our website at: Nevadacure.org.

You are welcome to join us as a member. Please visit this website page to read more: http://www.nevadacure.org/p/what-you-can-do.html
Members pay an annual $10.00 and are invited for the meetings, and they receive the Informational Bulletin. We also have volunteer-members.

You are needed to help sustain Nevada Cure!

Nevada Cure needs you! We need support for financing our Newsletters with news from the prisons in Nevada. The Nevada Cure Informational Bulletin is currently the only newsoutlet for (and by some of) the prisoners in Nevada.
With the sheer inhumane conditions prisoners have been enduring in Nevada, spreading the word about what goes on inside is essential: the public, the representatives of the people, needs to stay informed of human rights abuses, but also of opportunities for rehabilitation, injustice cases, etc.
